Drove from Raleigh NC to VT to Rochester NY then back to Foxboro for this one.
Laid on the ground and slept during Los Lobos (I think they opened)
When Playin started, I thought I slept through the first set.

This was my first experience seeing the Dead and I am really glad it was. I've been to many shows since and like someone else said, this particular show was not a blow your socks off, rockin show, but overall definitely felt more mellow. I believe this was the last year for camping and vending as well so the scene outside was amazing. We showed up a day and a half early and were able to really settle into our surroundings. BTW - Thanks to the guy and two girls playing/singing Buffalo Springfield on acoustic at 4am the night before the show while I was wandering the lot, coming down from a certain substance :) To me, this show was always more about the total experience than just the show itself but on an absolutely beautiful summer night in New England it was the perfect introduction to the world of the Grateful Dead...and I've been on the bus ever since.

Have had a 1st gen. second set tape seeded from NAK 300s since the day after I went to the show. This is the version you want, though. The sound is much more even and it doesn't have the 'tin-can' ring in the high frequencies that the NAK recording does. Get the FLACs.
I can't say much about the show that hasn't been said. I was there, and it was friggin' hot. Oh, muthah . . . Great set list. Wang Dang Doodle was fun. Great Tennessee Jed. Always happy to hear To Lay Me Down. Always. Those who've commented on this know what they're talkin' about: best ever Dear Mr. Fantasy/Hey Jude. Period. Off the hook, and everyone there knew it, including the band.
Three stars + one for being there.

This is one of the most memorable shows I have ever been to. I was not even going to this show. The night before, my wife and I were at a friends party in NJ, the band was playing and we were really toasted from the beer. At 1:00am July 2, the cops came and did their thing by telling us to end the party. Another friend came up and asked us where The Dead were playing next. We told him Foxboro but we did not have tickets or any money to go. To make a long story short, he got $100 bucks and we used my plastic for everything else. We got there at about 5am and were able to get a hotel room and only had to pay for one night. when we awoke at about 11:00am we left for the show. We ended up in major traffic about five miles from the show so we started to find tickets. Got tickets for all three of us for $85 total in about 15 minutes. Finally parked and met Uncle Cid. Dropped and went into the show. It was one the most incredible shows I had ever seen. Incredible opener and it only got better. I was completely blown away by the Hey-Jude - Mr. Fantasy intermingling. We even met other friends up there. It was great show, for those of you who were not there, it is must listen and very much worth the download.

July at Foxboro always a great time. Screaming heat coming down this day, I remember we went through the ice cold beers rather quickly, ended up wandering the lots, found an ice cold watermelon and some rum, made the trade for the goods and we enjoyed some cold Rum Melon, hit the spot that day!! Gobbled down our tabs as we crossed the street to the stadium. Got through rough security and it was packed. I remember it was very hot on those aluminum benches Foxboro stadium had.
The Dead opened up with Playin'>Crazy Fingers>Wand Dang.. that was perfect, set the mood for me right there!! I had a great happy trip and the music was perfect for me that day. It wasn't hopping up and down screaming rock and roll, that I might end up dancing myself into a ball of sweat in that weather, rather it felt nice and drifty and smooth, I forgot all about the heat once they started Playing..Later in the set a rare tune in those days, "To Lay Me Down" whew,, that was something to hear with a head full of acid, outside looking at the clouds a streaming... The 2nd set was just as fun, and it was cooling down, I made way down to the floor and squeezed just past the soundboard and was impressed at how much better it sounded down there. Friend of the Devil to open the 2nd set was surprisingly great !!
Beyond the nostalgic sentiment for me, the recording of this is rather good, very good for Foxboro, well worth it...
I thought it was fun show and rather well played considering the heat.

I attended this show, and at the time it struck me as being so-so. Listening to the recording for the first time, this is a supreme show. Not only is the ordering of the setlist interesting but the dynamic and musicianship are very strong. The loud crowd is common at this venue...which, btw, is now a parking lot for Gillette Stadium. I'll blame my buzzkill ex-girlfriend on my not appreciating this more at the time. -Monadnocker

Flew in from KC for this memorable show. Opener of Playin' was way cool, got things shakin' quickly. 2nd set opener of Friend was interesting mix up as well. The event before the show was wild- w/o any aud the band jammed w/members of Los Lobos as they performed "This Land is Your Land" acoustic. Very few people other than myself heard this due to the fact that it was part of their soundcheck and I just happened to walk near to the stadium as they did this. More sweet GD memories! D of KC

I was there, great show all around, but then they always tore it up in Foxboro. This is the recording you want, worth the extra hassle. If you are getting the top 5 shows for '89, this is not it. For me it's in the top 10, dunno if it's just because I attended. The Eyes branded me brain for life, I remember the exact moment. Very strong performance.
